This Day In History

In 1959 the first Barbie was displayed at the American Toy Fair.

Hello Barbie!   In 1955 a woman named Ruth Handler, according to History.com, noticed her young daughter seemed to prefer to play with paper dolls of adult women rather her baby dolls.  Handler realized there was a market for adult dolls that allowed children to imagine the future.

Handler and her husband founded Mattell, and Barbie was the first mass-produced adult doll.  Mattel was also the first toy company to broadcast commercials for children.  The doll was so popular that between 1961 and 1964 Ken, Midge and Skipper appeared on the scene.
